Consultant Opportunity: Agent Network Build-out

Based in Thies, Senegal with frequent travel to Mali and rural areas of both countries.  


myAgro is seeking an experienced individual consultant to provide specialized expertise and support on the implementation of myAgro’s Agent Network to reach small holder farmers across Africa.

About the Project(s)

myAgro is building out it’s Agent Network to reach small holder farmers in rural areas with agricultural services through efficient, convenient, and cost effective distribution channels. 

The consultant will draw on best practice in agent networks in Africa and other markets to develop, support and implement myAgro’s Agent Network project. 

Project Team

The consultant will work with a small team from myAgro, including team managers and field-based leaders, as well as the executive team.  The consultant will report directly to myAgro’s CEO.

Objectives & Responsibilities

Agent Network Design and Development:

  • Assess the functioning of agent network to identify gaps and recommend enhancements
  • Review and advise on processes:
    • Agent selection, recruitment, contracting and training
    • Monitoring and performance management
    • Organizational structure, training, staff profile and incentives
  • Establish the Agent Delivery department and build internal capacity to manage agents.
  • Agent Network build out and support – establish and build the capacity of the agent network by working with Client’s agent management team to ensure efficient implementation including identifying and selecting of potential agents.
  • Agent strategy implementation – assist in the implementation of new agent management processes through pilot testing, quality control and monitoring. Support the Client in identifying and recruiting super agents, aggregators and/or agent network managers to manage the new agent structure.
  • Customer activation strategy – support the Client in testing and implementing marketing campaigns and other customer activation programs
  • Capacity Building – provide training to the Client’s teams responsible for agent recruitment and quality management.
  • Deliver an Agent Playbook that includes:
    • Recruitment and on-boarding plan
    • Business tools required by agents 
    • Daily, weekly, and monthly reports on agent network performance that will drive management decision making
    • An on-going Agent training plan and materials for use by Agent supervisors

 General Implementation Support:

  • Track agent performance indicators against agreed targets and the myAgro strategy, through the collection of data from the Client
  • Provide input on project financial management (budget expenditures vs. budget allocation) and reporting, based on "on-the-ground" experience
  • Develop or revise procedures manuals for agent management
  • Advise on readiness to scale agent management operations with concrete recommendations on opportunities, gaps and strategic decisions


  • At least 7 years of experience managing agent networks for a bank, microfinance institution or mobile network operator
  • Track record of successful projects in implementation of agency and mobile banking projects required; priority will be given to candidates with experience managing an agent network
  • Demonstrated capacity to operate as part of a cross-functional team of experts and manage relationships with multiple stakeholders
  • Knowledge and demonstrable experience in West Africa preferably Senegal or Mali
  • Excellent oral and written English language skills and knowledge of French is required
  • A can-do and collaborative mindset and hands on personality – comfort with the ambiguities and demands of a rapidly evolving environment
  • Able to work under little supervision, problem solver and result oriented under tight deadlines
  • Expertise and experience in training
